Igreja de Santa Clara
Monument & Heritage
The Santa Clara Church is located in the parish of Sé and was built right next to the most visible part of the Fernandina Walls, and was completed in 1457.
The church is of a Gothic structural style and was built after the Vatican's license to move the order of the Entre-os-Rios into the walls of the borough. Although the request for the displacement of the female order and commissioning of the building was carried out by the monarch D. Filipa de Lencastre, the construction was completed by her husband, King D. João I.
The entrance to this church is from the Baroque era, dating from 1697, having undergone remodeling works in the 18th century with renaissance elements such as Solomonic columns and Corinthian capitals. In its interior we can find one of the best examples of the gold carving art of the Baroque Joanino of the city.
